  • Comment from Real G

    RESPECT GURU…RESPECT GSF…

We need to give Guru the respect he deserves as a legend…just as he would want…big up to Preem and the whole gsf for doing so. Let his son KC see how much a REAL HIP HOP LEGEND his father IS.
Solar will go out in due time…pisses everyone off how the devil fuked with Gurus mind….but love is stronger then evil no doubt and Guru once told me “Positve energy always corrects negative actions”….so Guru already won by being an angel shining down on us. Gonna be hard getting over the loss of him but in God We Trust…so just live your life with peace in your hearts and minds.

    BLESS

  • Comment from Eric Francis

Why the fuck does solar have the gangstarr logo on his page? I just noticed this.

He was riding Guru’s coattails big time and to have the balls to use the gangstarr logo on his twitter page when Guru seemed confused and in a bad period of his life and saying Gangstarr was only him and Primo was only peripheral…

Im an outsider and dont have all the facts, but hearing Primo discuss how he sneaked in at the hospital, and feel sad about how Guru went out (cold silent room with nobody around, no music, no love) makes me think of how sect people isolate members from outside opinions who could shake em up a bit like “Hey man, come back, we love you”. You can also see this in the way his nephew Justin was treated, even as an outsider you can see the tip of the iceberg.

I have a nephew who holds me in the same kind of esteem ive seen Justin talk about Guru, and it takes a mean bastard to try to isolate someone in death like this if thats really how it happened.

  • Comment from thekingsmen

Damn Primo I know that was hurtful to see Guru in the hospital. I was crushed when I heard the news cause Gangstarr wasn’t just a group they were family and you never want to see your family suffer. Thank God you took the time out to clear the air for those who didn’t have a clue on what was going on. God Bless the Elam Family as well as the Gangstarr Family. Stay Strong and you know the fans have love and respect for all you guys. R.I.P. Guru you will be missed but not forgotten. Gangstarr the greatest duo ever!!!!

BTW…Justin sounds just like Guru, that gave me chills down my spine.

  • Comment from KJ

Betrayal was the first song I thought of after I read Guru’s Solar’s letter. Nice way to set it off. Thanks for the years of music.

  • Comment from CK

    Guru. Gangstarr. Fuck.

I can’t believe it. This mix is a great tribute though. Thanks so much. Guru truly was a one of a kind dude. There will never be any one even close. His lyrics will live on forever as long as we keep listening to Gangstarr.

    R.I.P. G.U.R.U.

  • Comment from Darkyy84

To be honest, I found out about Gang Starr a little bit late, my first album wasn’t the No More Mr. Nice Guy nor Step in the Arena. I started listenin’ to some polish stuff first (everyone was into Liroy, as well as me, the hip-hop scene wasn’t that big as it is now here in Poland), the first non-polish rap album I got was Cypress Hill IV, then I copped their previous LPs (still got the cassettes). Then there was Nas, Rakim, Wu-Tang, Cube and some time later I got the 8 Mile Soundtrack from my friend. Heard the Battle track and I instantly fell in love with that duo. Premier’s amazin’ productions and Guru’s original, monotone style and intelligent rhymes. I copped No More Mr. Nice Guy as soon as possible, then Step in the Arena. Gusto, Got U, Cause and Effect, Precisely the Right Rhymes, Here Today Gone Tomorrow, Just To Get a Rep… too many to mention. I said to myself: “That’s it. That’s that old school tune, real classic flavour right here. Why the hell I haven’t discovered this stuff before?” Some time later, it was like 2003, so the Ownerz was comin’ out, got it as soon as it was avaible. It may seem strange for some people, but it’s my favourite Gang Starr album, love every track on it, funk grooves, head-noddin’ jazz breaks, rhyme scheme on Zonin’, appearances (especially Smiley, Jada, Krumb). Then I got my hands on the rest of the Gang Starr albums, Daily Operation, Hard to Earn, Moment of Truth. Primo plus Guru, their albums are like… every track is something, Gang Starr albums are those ones that have songs you never skip, hear them all and then repeat. I think that everything I’d say about Gang Starr has already been said, so no need to write more.
As for the solo career… Jazzmatazz albums are genius. A perfect mixture of jazz, rap, soul, even funk and reggae. Much love & respect, Guru, for that project, the jazz-hip-hop idea. Really love the first two (vol. 1 & 2). Lifesaver, Something in the Past, Sights in the City, Loungin’… with The Traveler being my all-time favourite.
And there’s also the Baldhead Slick and Da Click album. Much underrrated in my opinion, I really love this one. It’s got some really nice productions (The Alchemist, Pete Rock, Ayatollah), but most importantly – Guru’s real, hard spittin’ style (Where’s Our Money, War Tactics, Cry, The Come Up, How You Gonna Be a Killa, and my fav – The Anthem). And for the guest appearances… Guru teams up with Ice-T, Big Shug, Krumbsnatcha, Timbo King, Treach, Killah Priest. Guru ver. 7.0 was ok (What’s My Life Like), and the 8.0: Lost and Found…well, maybe I should give it a few more hearings.
Anyways, after hearing the first Gang Starr album I was diggin’ for anything Guru’d appear on – I got some real rare tracks, go to my youtube page and check them out, and there’s also my Guru video tribute I’ve just added. Feel free to leave your comments, your thoughts, what was your first Gang Starr/Guru track, etc.
Guru will always be in my top 10 greatest MCs of all time. Period.

    “Keep that realness alive. Peace.”

premier is a real human being. stand up guy, honest and forthright. the polar opposite of super lame producer solar. my heart sank when primo described gurus final resting place. wild afro, long nails, swollen feet. solar is an evil faggot, hell get his. better go hiding underground, because solar is public enemy number 1 in the hip hop world. hip hop polices itself, solar will get his. no more work, no more concerts, no more albums, its over. i dont wish pain on anyone, but solar deserves broken bones, and more. faking letters, deceiving guru and his own family. hell get is. the way of the universe.

  • Comment from Big Braveheart

Gang Starr forever and don’t let anybody put a stop to that Guru will be missed but i’m proud of the civilized way in which you have gone about things Preem. You said all the right things that others couldn’t and it is a truly sad, sad week for real hip-hop so all the respect must go to you for holding things together. Guru was a great lyricist but without your beats he was simply great. Respect Primo and
    RIP Guru. Big B

  • Comment from Big Braveheart

I actually meant to say Guru was great with your beats and without them it sadly wasn’t the same, Undoubtably you were the dynamic duo
    of hip-hop. Word.

All of the statements made about you Primo are garbage. Wherever Guru is now he knows that LOVE is the true way. So even if he did feel that way on his exit, he’s looking down on this now with love and positivity.

    RIP Guru.
    Gangstarr is eternal!

  • Comment from Eric Francis

Salute to Guru, great rememberance talk in between the mix, was nice to hear the story of how Guru started out and the meaning of the chain and all that. He will live on forever through the music Primo and himself made through Gangstarr!

  • Comment from Task

  • Comment from Clark

Yo, If ma brotha would’ve passed tragically, like Guru was a brotha for Premo, and if i dj i would have not sampled ma dj name like that and non of that B.S. on a brothas “tribute mix” as sign of R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Damn son, when the humbleness gotta flow, it it ain’t on a situation like this?? Think again, invert the role, and breath.

    Clark, Costa Rica.

    Gang Starr FOREVER
Respect to Premier for a beautiful salute, the way it should be done. Stand proud, and let the music speak! [enjoyed the sublime disses, brought a bit of laughter to the situation]
    Respect!
    RIP Guru.

  • Comment from Tanea One

Cheers Premier, rest in peace to the G-U-Rhymes-Universal, some of the realest, most poignant and heartfelt hip hop that will ever be made, AND the dopest killer combo; grimey, musical beats and tense but effortless rhymes. Respect from Melbourne, Australia.
