The Big L & Jay-Z Freestyle On Stretch & Bobbito Show Extended Unreleased 10min Version

Hip Hop has many never found stuff where 90s freaks like me are hunting on like wild animals. Like this for instance, the full Stretch & Bobbito Show with Big L & Jay-Z as guests on the 23th of February 1995. The only thing we had was the legendary freestyle that was cut out. Props to HecticEclectic to upload his recorded tape from that day that featured more shit. For me personally this is the best moment ever recorded on radio… Big L IS the best MC ever, since I first had a track of him. ‘You can put your man on too’, I wonder if he knew he would be in Forbes magazine and shit 15 years later? The most powerful hip hop artist ever was back then just Big L’s man haha. This shit is classic, no doubt. Props to Stretch & Bobbito for making everything so legendary. I tweaked it for y’all. Enjoy and reminisce:

Sidenote, Big L’s family putting out a new official project next month. Support! Big props to The Big Sleep for holding down Big L on the internet. We brothers.

Salute on this timeless gem but Jay was just L’s man? lol was L not supposed to sign with Rocafella?

  • Comment from Sunny Dee

    Ahh…

This freestyle is just f****** amazing! Most legendary radio moment, without doubt!

    SIck post, much love!

Big L! R.I.P. Wish you still was here.

  • Comment from Blockz

L made Jay look like an amateur on this shit.

  • Props for the editing gimantalon..Always bothered me that my tape flipped right in the middle of such a classic moment in Hip Hop radio history..Can’t complain too much though since it seems like the rest of the Hip Hop world doesn’t have this on tape.

  • Props for this fellas! HecticEclectic, did you record the whole show from that night??? Or did you only record the Big L & Jay-Z segment? I’m from Cali and had Sway & King Tech’s Wake Up Show, but always wished I could listen to Stretch & Bobbito too. Sometimes Sway & Tech would play freestyle sessions from Stretch & Bobbito on the Wake Up Show cuz Bobbito and Kevvy Kev were cool and Bob would send shit to Kev.

Much props for this man! Even though it’s a freestyle, it stands as my favorite song ever with my two favorite emcees of all-time on the same track. This was probably the first “song” where I memorized the lyrics from beginning to end. Was there any more to the show with these two or did it pretty much end following the freestyle? Thanks again for this gem fam.

Yeah, in ’99 L was scheduled to sign to Rocafella, the startings of which dates back to ’98. But this was early ’95. Jay-Z was just starting the Roc and L was on a major label putting Jay on, so at the time Jay was L’s man.

Credit goes out to HecticEcltectic and you for putting this together. And thanks for the props man, keep doin’ what you do. Peace brother.

Milk bone – ‘keep it real’ that track and beat killed it in the 90’s

I always thought Big L is / was the best MC ever and it’s good to hear someone else out there agrees. His flow and wordplay are unmatched. And his lyrics are beyond grimy, but with humor to take off the edge. His talent was genius.

Damn, never thought that this would happen. My all-time favorite freestyle, major props to HecticEclectic – many real hip-hop fans appreciate this.

Yo, that’s much appreciated fam. Thanks for the show from that night, memories right there. 2/23/95 was a date to remember for Hip-Hop history. This makes me miss good Hip-Hop radio like Stretch & Bobbito even though I was too young to experience it back in the 90’s. Glad we have DJ Premier’s Live From HeadQCourterz show for this generation to carry on the feeling.

  • Yoooo, thanks for the sharing the 90 minutes you recorded. I’m gonna hopefully have a listen late tonight while puffin’ some of that good Cali shit and drinkin on some Captain & Coke.

Yo SBK, you truly missed out in the 90’s my man. Yes, thankfully we have shows like Primo’s and DJ Eclipse’s to keep givin us that real shit today, but the reality is that nothing compares to the old shows like Stretch & Bobbito, The King Tech Wake Up Show, Future Flavas with Marley Marl, etc. No disrecpect to Preem or anything, but even his show doesn’t get me all excited n shit. I do look forward to hearing the shows though, don’t get me wrong, but it’s still waaaaaaaaaaaay different then before. And there’s still plenty of dope Hiphop out today and coming out, but there’s always a handfull of joints that Preem be playin that I’m just not feelin and that kinda thing almost NEVER happened on the other shows I mentioned. I don’t really care to hear some OK joint off a new Snoop album if it’s not produced by Primo. Same with hearing joints from Rick Ross or even WC. I’m sorry, but I just don’t wanna hear that shit. There’s soooooooooooo much dope shit in the underground that Preem be overlooking. And even with DJ Eclipse, there’s a few joints that he’ll play that I’m just not caring for. All good though, I still love listening to both of the shows… But it’s just soooooo different then how it was with the other shows.

    @Shaun D. aka Wicked

    Took my words…
Gim thanks for the mixcloud link!
It’s dope the way Preem mixed those joints! Inspiration!

    史上最高のRADIO FREESTYLE.

  • Thanks gimantalon, but I’ve had pretty much all of those Thunderstorm radio shows for years now… They’re all very dope!

  • Yo HecticEclectic, again, thank you man… I’m bumpin the 90 mins you posted right now. I guess you were a “pause editer” back then, huh??? Unfortunately I did the same sometimes with old Wake Up Shows. I hate that shit now though.

Hopefully some day Stretch himself might post the whole 4 hours unedited. Wishful Thinking… haha

  • Yeah Shaun D..was definitely a tape editor..had class early on Friday mornings at the time and couldn’t stay up to put in a second tape so I tried to cram as much on one tape as possible. In hindsight I wish I would have taped more of the talking from the shows but I guess something is better than nothing..20 Year Anniversary Reunion coming up!

“Big L is the greatest ever because even in 95 he was just beyond of his game. listen to jay hes jackin l’s flow”

^ There’s nothing worse than pure internet ignorance delivered as wisdom.

jay was doing that flow back in 90 – on wax with The Jaz – here:

    Idiot.

  • Comment from Stretch Armstrong

What’s really bugged about this show is that I gave Big L and Jay-Z the “Keep It Real” beat, but Sun Doobie from Funkdoobiest got Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya?” Not saying that the former was not hot, but Jay and L over Nyshiem’s beat would have made the recording even more legendary. Anyway, for those that know, these shows were almost completely unplanned, and those pianos compliment these two greats’ flows regardless.

This recording is also sped up, giving it that mild chipmunk effect.

I hope you all tune in on to WKCR 89.9 FM NY this Thursday, October 21 to catch Bobbito and me at 1am.

  • Comment from Grim LeRogue

Big L was the only one sick enough to inspire me to try and rap as a kid

  • Yeah Shaun D..was definitely a tape editor..had class early on Friday mornings at the time and couldn’t stay up to put in a second tape so I tried to cram as much on one tape as possible. • Comment from Cozzabags

That won’t play and for some reason it won’t let me download on that Fileserve site. Has the file been taken down?!

Frustrating – would love to hear it, that’s my favourite radio session ever, too!

  • Comment from MUH FACKS

OH, THIS IS WHERE JAYZ BITES NAS “RISE LIKE YEAST” LINE, RIGHT?

  • Comment from Louis

Yo please post another link to the file to D/L or stream, they’re both broken – thanks! big ups!
