DJ Premier Wants to Work With Drake & J. Cole, Believes They “Brought Lyricism Back”

DJ Premier may be from what young hip-hop listeners would now consider the “old school,” but he wouldn’t remain one of the most revered producers more than twenty years into his career if he didn’t know how to adapt to the culture’s evolving landscape. Preem’s revered ear is for more than samples; he’s got an ear for the new generation’s rising talent, as well. In a recent interview with the legendary hip-hop architect he revealed to XXLMag.com that he hopes to work with rising stars J. Cole and Drake.

“I saw Drake at the Yankee Stadium [concert with Jay-Z and Eminem for their Home & Home Tour] and he [was] just like bowing and all that,” recalled the beatsmith. “I’m like, ‘Nah you ain’t gotta do that, man.’ And he’s like, ‘Dude, I wanna work with you.’ And I was like, ‘Dude, I wanna work with you.’”

As far as Premo is concerned, Drizzy has earned respect for his skills with the pen blackberry. “He brought lyricism back,” he said of the Toronto-native. “For a 22-year-old man, he brought lyricism back. When [Gang Starr’s] Step In The Arena came out, I was 22-years-old. And I just thought about it, I was like, Damn, I was a youngster. I wasn’t 30, 31. I was 22 and coming with heat. And that’s why I like that he’s bringing stuff back.

The Roc Nation MC is also on Preem’s radar. “J. Cole, I like that he’s bringing lyrics back,” he added.

Never hesitant to drop knowledge about hip-hop history, the innovator then added, “Everything doesn’t have to be super, over-lyrical, but we do pride ourselves on cats that can spit, because [rap music] was always a competition about who got the dopest rhymes.”

The hip-hop icon is currently gearing up for the release of DJ Premier Presents Year Round Records: Get Used To Us. The compilation, which features appearances by Styles P, Saigon, Royce Da 5′9″, Joell Ortiz, and Grand Puba, among others, is set to drop on December 7.

fuck drake, premier is high to think he’s bringing heat

  • Comment from Breeze

Please don’t work with Drake. That would not be a good look for you Preme. J. Cole on the other hand has talent. I wouldn’t say no to a collabo between the 2.

    No Preem, no.

Someone I’d like to see work with Premier is Sean Price. Now that would be something. But more than that is Wu Tang members – notably Raekwon, Ghostface, Method, and especially the Genius.

  • I do not like Drake’s music AT ALL, but I do know the dude has a lot of talent. His voice does kind of annoy me, but who knows, maybe he’ll sound nice over a Primo beat (but then again, who wouldn’t? haha)? I’m still 50/50 on this collabo though…

As for J.Cole, that dude’s pretty cool… I think there’s been a song or two of his that’s aiiiiiiiight.

And please PLEASE I hope DJ Premier NEVER EVER works with Lil “faggit” Wayne. That is one dude I hate (yes, hate) with a passion. I respect his hustle, but hate him and his image and he has one of the worst voices in Rap music EVER!

what the fuck Preem?, stop listening and supporting wack shit.

Raekwon works with Justin Bieber and now this?…I am really starting to lose faith in some of my fave artists and producers.

come on guys dont be so negative. i know they are mainstream artists and everything, but they arent as bad as most of the people ive listened to from that side of the aisle.

Drake’s voice can get annoying a lot, but hopefully he changes it up on a Premo beat. Its really going to be different hearing Drake on a Premo beat. Because Premo makes classic, raw, east coast beats that BANG and the environment it makes you feel like youre in is New York City, not in a ferrari ridin with bitches or something like that. So Drake better not let us classic heads down. We dont take no bs.

  • Comment from Hotline 666

    Fuck you Preemo.
You conquer a whole legacy of fans to do that shit?

Next is Justin Bieber! With some oldschool cuts! And with that hard Mary Jane Girls Snares, Right?
And the Excuse is… I’m a Pro… and the guy as talent!!!

    C’Mon!

Why don’t you get hard to get a album with Jay z and Nas??? (At least both of them are not so underground and you can get money)

  • Comment from AMAru

sorry “Hotline 666” but you’re talkin’ straight bullshit. there’s a BIG difference between drake and justin bieber, if you REALLY think there’s a minimal chance of preem linkin up with bieber, you don’t really know premo, so don’t exaggerate. I don’t feel drake neither, but any rapper can sound good on a premo beat, plus this is another chance to get mainstream recognition which preem definitely deserves. besides, premo should try harder to work with jigga and nas, are you serious??? dou you know how many beats nas and jigga rejected over the past years??? preem sent jay-z tracks for blueprint, american gangster and blueprint 3, and as far as nas is concerned, he got some beats from premo for god’s son, hip hop is dead, and I think he sent him some heat for untitled, so it’s up to them not to preem, if they don’t wanna work with preem, why not workin’ with other artists.
by the way I would love to hear j cole spittin on a preem joint

Love the idea someone posted above me. Make a track with Sean P, not some fucking mainstream dude Drake.

  • Comment from Hector Klink

I don’t like Drake music. I’m feelin none of Drake music.
But when Preem wants to work with dude, he’s siezing the chance to directly influence a young crowd of rap fans that don’t have Preem on their radar, bridge a gap between the boom bap and the weak, watered-down radio music, and earn some money at the same token.

To me, Premo pulled a grown-ass powermove, no a living grown-ass legend powermove and he’s doing it for the kids ya’ll. If Preem can make Drake sound hot on a beat, certain heads would still be hatin. He worked with Aguilera and Kanye West in the past. If you trust Preem to deliver good music, keep doing just that cause he’s better than ever.
