VIBE: DJ Premier vs Bangladesh

I didn’t put any word out about this producer competition Vibe Magazine organized until now. I don’t know, I have mixed feelings about it. Oh well, what does it hurt? And it’s interesting to see how strong the 90s hip hop community is on the internet. How far will DJ Premier go?

For the people who don’t know, Vibe Magazine is organizing a big ass competition to find the greatest hip hop producer of all time. In total 64 producers are listed in 4 groups. DJ Premier is in group 4 called “Boom Bap”. Dr Dre is in the first group “Homegrown”. Here is Preems group:

DJ Premier VS Bangladesh
RZA VS Rocwilder
Marley Marl VS Dame Grease
Rick Rubin VS The Beatnuts
Jam Master Jay VS Easy Mo Bee
Large Professor VS Q-Tip
Diamond D VS DJ Muggs
Havoc VS Da Beatminerz

Each winner of the group will take it up against a winner from another group I guess? Here are the dates when each vote end:

4/05 – First Round Begins
4/19 – Second Round Begins
4/26 – Third Round Begins
5/03 – Elite 8 Producer Battle Begins
5/10 – Final Four Producer Battle Begins
5/17 – Final Round Begins
5/24 – Winner Announced

I would say hate it or love it, but since Vibe is getting a lot of reactions from the producers self I’m going to keep this updated. The first round for DJ Premier will be easy, no offense. Today Bangladesh commented on the competition saying he’s isn’t a hip hop producer, but simply the best producer. Quotes like “Honestly, I’m Better Than All Them [Producers]”.

With unpopular quotes like this he has some respectful comments though, “I’m definitely deserving to be on the list as one of the best producers right now, but I wouldn’t say hip-hop. Probably the only hip-hop thing I made was ‘A Milli’ and that was probably the greatest beat of this era,” the Atlanta-based producer told VIBE. “I think if you really define hip-hop, Premier is really the best hip-hop producer. He’s amazing with samples… he’s the essence of hip-hop.”

wow, a lot of those match-ups are no-brainers!!! how could anyone NOT choose Pete Rock over cool & dre??? erick sermon vs daz; that was a coin flip for me. i chose NO ID jus cuz of that “i used to love h.e.r.” joint. u have no choice BUT Kanye. maan a lotta dem were coin flips!! diamond d vs muggs, large pro vs q-tip, havoc vs da beatminerz…

Strongly agree with Berto. RZA vs. Rockwilder, heads or tails?

  • Comment from DJ SoulClap

lol, this bangladesh dude is stupid as hell… a milli was a couple 808s with a clap and some vocals on it.

most of these were actually pretty easy for me. while some of the match ups were agreeably no-brainers, some were close in terms of caliber of the producers (large pro/q-tip, diamond d/muggs), but while i respect legendary producers in the game i almost always have a clear favorite in these cases. the only REAL trouble for me was havoc vs. beatminerz.

and i disagree about rza and rockwilder being a coin flip. my personal feelings about rza being likely the greatest ever to do it for a given time period (rza at the top of his game 93-97 > everyone else at the top of their game, period), rockwilder has not had the impact of rza or developed such a dope, high profile catalog as rza. it’s tough to argue otherwise.

SORRY BUT SOMEONE SHOULD STEAL A GAS CAN FROM SOMEWHERE AND FILL IT UP WITH GASOLINE AND GO START AN ARSON OVER AT VIBE MAGAZINE SO THEY CAN BURN IT DOWN AND PUT THAT MUTHAFUCKA OUT OF BUSINESS FOR GOOD BECAUSE THIS THE 2ND TIME THEY’VE BEEN TRYING TO START COMPETITIVE PROBLEMS AMONGST MUSICIANS LIKE THE JOE BUDDEN AND METHOD MAN STINT THAT DIDN’T HAVE TO GO DOWN…IF QUINCY AIN’T GONNA DO NOTHING TO GET RID OF THOSE CLOWNS OVER THERE THEN THEY SHOULD JUST BURN VIBE MAGAZINE DOWN AND GET RID OF IT ALL TOGETHER!

maaan fuck bangladesh.. “A Milli” is some of the wackest joints i ever heard. He’s got it all in his dicksucking mouth – his repetoire is so fucking weak.

yo where da fuck is pete man ? bangladesh vs preem lol are you kiddin me man, but at least preemo will be on the next round, thats a pretty good thing … havoc vs da beatminerz, this gon be the hardest choice to do, too much classics from both parts, too much memories listenin to ol mobb bangers and same thing wit these ol boot campian joints, kinda too hard

    @NK

    Only reason i also voted.
    But now, after round 2,
    Swizz Beatz Vs Timbaland…
In my opinion neither of them are’t suppose to be in round 3. There were greater HIP HOP producers, who did not meke it even to round 2. Like Beatminerz, Large Pro, Diamond D.
On the other hand, it is arranged to find The Rank 1, The One, The Best. Not the top 10 or 3 or Elite 8.
And no question who is The Gratest. ;D
