DJ Premier, Black Sheep’s Dres & His Son Team Up With ‘Angry Birds’

Many children are obsessed with video game franchise Angry Birds, but Sidney Max, son of Black Sheep’s Andres “Dres” Titus, took his infatuation to a whole new level. After falling in love with the franchise, Max began creating rhymes about the game and showcasing them to his father in his spare time. Dres filmed a video of his son performing an Angry Birds tribute, which garnered Max a social media following. Dres then called up his buddy DJ Premier to discuss the possibility of him producing the track. Premier said yes. The trio then teamed up with a contact at Rovio, the mastermind behind the famous game, and Angry Birds signed on to go hip-hop.

On July 1, Angry Birds took over the streets of New York to film a music video for Max’s track “Here Come The Birds.” “It’s a really cool track,” says producer DJ Premier of the track that made him want to work with Max. “He has the cutest little voice. It’s pre-puberty!” The video features Angry Birds graffiti, green screen animations, as well as DJ Premier, Max, and his Dres. “Sidney even gets to pull out a bow and arrow and yell ‘the birds are coming’ and shoot the pigs and things,” explains Premier. “It really was a fun shoot!”

Angry Birds will drop the video on Aug. 17, which will kick off an official weeklong hip-hop-themed tournament on Angry Birds Friends. “You can play this on Facebook or on the mobile game and the beauty of it is that you are competing against your friends,” says Rovio Entertainment’s marketing director, Kai Torstila. This particular tournament will center upon the culture of old school hip-hop. “It will have special graphics that are inspired by Max, Dres and Premier’s contribution to the genre,” Torstila adds. “We wanted to do little nods towards Angry Birds in a visual style and wanted to achieve something that is stylistic, a little bit retro, and pays homage to the hip-hop culture, but with a lot of modern twists to it.”

Once the video is released, it will provide gamers with instructions on how to enroll in the tournament. Rovio will also be providing links where people can download the exclusive track. “It’s not the first time that we’ve dabbled in music,” says Torstila. “But this is certainly the first time we’ve done a custom collaboration at this level and a video to kick off a social gaming campaign,” he adds. Going forward, Rovio says they absolutely intend to keep working with high profile artists and fusing their take on the Angry Birds world into upcoming projects.

Meanwhile, Premier has found a whole new area calling. “Now the video has taken place, we are talking about possibly doing a whole soundtrack with kids and I’ll produce it. That hasn’t materialized yet but it would be dope if it does,” he tells Billboard. The famed DJ/producer also revealed that the game has grown on him quite a bit since becoming involved with the campaign. “I was in the studio with my artist Khaleel and his son’s mother when [she] grabbed my phone and put the game on it.” And after months of sneaking in gaming sessions in between recording time, Premier is an Angry Birds mastermind at this point. “It took a minute but I got it down. I can get to all the high levels now,” he says with a laugh.

In May this year Miguel said the song didn’t make the album but now it looks like the track “Damned” will be released on the Deluxe Edition of the album.

DJ Premier and His Live Band Announce European Tour

DJ Premier will be heading out on the road for a tour alongside his newly-formed band. During the month of September, DJ Premier and his live band will make 15 stops across Europe. Their first stop will be Sept. 2 in Leipzig, Germany, wrapping up Sept. 19 in Mannheim, Germany.

Earlier this year, Preemo made a drastic change when the iconic D&D Studios on 320 West 37th Street closed down. He later moved to Queens to set up the new HeadQcourterz and announced the formation of the five-piece band. The band consists of Brady Watt on bass, Lenny “The Ox” Reece on drums, Takuya Kuroda handling the horn and keys, Mark Williams on the trombone and keys as well, with Preemo taking over the turntables. Soon after the announcement, the crew started playing together and hit Japan for their debut. Now that they’ve been grooving together for a few months, it’s time to take the show back on the road.

“When we put the band together, the key to any relationship is that you vibe together in a way that you can make magic happen,” he said. “That’s what happened with me and Guru, that’s what must continue with anybody I connect with.”

In addition to touring this fall, Preemo is still working in the studio. The legendary DJ will be producing Eiht’s Which Way Iz West LP in its entirety. He’s also working on music for Miguel, PRhyme and Ed Sheeran and most recently landed a VH-1 original movie, The Breaks.

DJ Premier Signs On As Music Producer For VH1 Rap Drama ‘The Breaks’

Grab your Kangol and head over to Jeans West for some new threads. VH1 has announced production of The Breaks, an original movie about the Hip Hop business set in New York City during the early 90s, that will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential series. DJ Premier, multiple Grammy-award winning member of the seminal rap group Gang Starr, will serve as executive music producer and compose the score.

The Breaks is based on Dan Charnas’ nonfiction book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, which covers the rap game from its infancy in the 1970s house party scene through the staggering financial and cultural milestones of the early 00s. Set in 1990, the series will follow three friends from different backgrounds attempting to break into the business just as the art form was escaping out of the margins and becoming part of the pop music mainstream.

Given the setting, which happens to mark the middle point of the golden age of hip hop, the rise of gangsta rap, and the height of New Jack Swing, DJ Premier’s involvement is a huge advantage. In addition to his work with Gang Starr, Premier has been involved with some of the most influential and successful rap and R&B albums of all time, including works by Compton’s Most Wanted, Nas, D’angelo, The Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z.

The Breaks follows VH1’s previous TV films, 2013’s CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and 2014’s Drumline: A New Beat, both of which saw great ratings for the network. If successful it could spawn a full series aimed at the audience of other shows with soundtracks overseen by music legends, like Fox’s Empire, with music production by Timbaland, and ABC’s Nashville, which saw T-Bone Burnett as music producer during its first season.

The Breaks will be written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann, whose previous credits include episodes of The Wire, Fringe, The Riches, Entourage, and Homeland. In addition to his production work, DJ Premier is also the host of a weekly show on Sirius XM’s Hip Hop Nation. Filming for The Breaks will begin in June, and the film is scheduled to air sometime in late fall, 2015.
