DJ Premier Produced Track “Let It Off” On CZARFACE Upcoming Album

Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric have announced that they are joining forces as CZARFACE, with plans to deliver a project in the near future.

According to a press release, the two acts joined forces as an addendum to their 1999 collaboration “Speaking Real Worlds.” The project will feature guest appearances from Action Bronson, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Roc Marciano and Large Professor, as well as additional beats from DJ Premier and album art by Lamour Supreme from Mishka NYC.

“The industry doesn’t need another well packaged, put together ‘act,’ instead fans are once again gravitating to the seasoned vets and newcomers that are still true to the game,” said Deck.

“We are CZARFACE because they know our faces and they know us for being dope rhyme suppliers, like Tony Montana we are known for our balls and our word; lyrically we will conquer the world and everything in it,” he continues. Esoteric adds, “CZARFACE is a vigilante, anti-hero character who serves as the face of the project, and his focus is on annihilating the media darlings that the mainstream caters to.”

The track that DJ Premier produced on the album is called “Let It Off”.

DJ Quik Apologies To DJ Premier

During his respectful admiration for legendary east coast producer DJ Premier, Quik abruptly interjects, “I owe Premo an apology though … I picked up the phone and I couldn’t dial 917 … I didn’t want to cry.”

After the untimely passing of the lyrical half of Gang Starr on April 19th of 2010, artists were calling into DJ Premier’s Live from Headcourterz Sirius/XM Satellite radio show recounting stories of the late emcee. “After Guru died I was supposed to call his radio station and reflect on Guru teaching me how to smoke a blunt,” explains Quik reminiscing of the time in New York, “I felt like I got into this private club.”

After admitting he “got cold feet” and knowing he “would get emotional talking about [the] guy” Quik, who himself has experienced the loss of his emcee Johnny “Mausberg” Burns not to mention Eazy E and Roger Troutman, pauses and reflects “that’s another great that we lost.”

Quik gives his reaction to The Fast Life’s suggested collaboration of a DJ Quik, DJ Premier and Erick Sermon producer’s album.

He merges his potent and forever meaningfull rhymes with beats and instruments directly from authentic lounge jazz. The album fuses an assortment of jazz talents both old and new, including Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston, Roy Ayers, Courtney Pine, Branford Marsalis , and Ronny Jordan. He used the melodic voices of Carleen Anderson and N’Dea Davenport and collaborated with french rapper MC Solaar. The variety of guest artists adds diversity and originality to each track, and gives the album a distinct jazz feel. In its own right the album is a historical document of jazz and hip-hop starting to blend.

Lord Finesse Names “Baby, You Nasty” As His 5th Favorite Sample Flip

Lord Finesse: “During the making of Funky Technician I would sit with Premier all day listening to records, trying to pick out loops for the album. I would sit there sometimes til we’d both be nodding off. [laughs] One day he pull out that Young-Holt Unlimited record and as soon as I heard the drums I absolutely lost my mind. I was like, “That’s it right there” – just off the drum loop alone! Man, I didn’t care what he added on top as long as he had that drum loop running. I knew we could come up with something funky.”

A-Trak Names “Ten Crack Commandments” As His 3rd Favorite Sample Flip

A-Trak: “Premier beats were always so iconic that you became ultra-familiar with the samples, and then one day you’d hear the original source and it would be just a couple passing notes in the middle of a song and you’d respect him even more for noticing that section! I could easily do a Top 10 Sample Flips of just Premier. The “Ten Crack Commandments” beat speaks to me in particular because he scratched the sample and it make the scratching part of the production. It wasn’t a solo, it became an essential part of what the sample brought to the track.”

“Ten Crack Commandments” samples Les McCann – “Vallarta” (ABC, 1977).

Director Fab 5 Freddy Talks Music Video “Just To Get A Rep”

Hard to believe but this month marks 21 years since the release of Gang Starr’s sophomore album, Step In the Arena. The LP’s lead single, and some would argue, the definitive Gang Starr song, “Just To Get a Rep,” neatly encapsulates all the group’s signature musical elements (e.g. Guru’s detailed street narrative with a conscience; DJ Premier’s peerless production and precisely dispensed scratch hooks). But nearly as important to the record’s success with hip-hop devotees upon its release was its accompanying video. Inventively directed by Yo! MTV Raps host Fab 5 Freddy, shot in stark black and white, and prominently featuring several Gang Starr Foundation members, the “Just To Get a Rep” music video is perhaps the ideal visual rendering of the song imaginable. Ever the gentleman, Fab 5 Freddy recalls the making of this classic music video. Along the way, Fab talks no-budget shooting constraints and casting concerns, Williamsburg before the hipstaz took over, and how Guru and Premier captured the essence of a BK street institution: the stick up kid.

Large Professor Names “Supa Star” As His 3rd Favorite Sample Flip

Large Professor: “This is when Premier really started to take flight. This song musically translates decades of ghetto life. Those chops from Cameo “Hanging Downtown” sound like a hot summer night standing under a streetlight to me. When you hear how wobbly the original is, and [then] hear how Premier placed those sounds to the beat, that’s drum machine magic.”

“Supa Star” samples Cameo – “Hanging Downtown” (Atlanta Artists, 1984).

Gang Starr Foundation Member Krumb Snatcha Retires From Hip-Hop

Sad news here. Well, he doesn’t really retire from hip hop (because that’s impossible), but he does retires from rhyming. Gang Starr Foundation member announced on his facebook he’s going to retire from the rap game. As an old friend of Guru from Boston he was introduced to DJ Premier very early. One of his early appearances was on the ’98 Gang Starr album “Moment of Truth” on the historical song “Make ‘Em Pay”. His verse on that song immediately gave him the shine in the Hip Hop world. He received The Source’s Hip Hop Quotable for his verse on that song and became the first to ever receive a Quotable while being locked up in prison. After that he only made more classics with DJ Premier and others. This is the open letter he wrote to his friends and fans:

Unfortunately due to unfortunate circumstances I have decided to no longer be a part of certain elements and or musical endeavors. As of this day I no longer am affiliated with any label and/or management… I apologize to friends and fans but changing and putting self first is in my best interest. There will be no next album from me… I have decided to honor my commitment to the youth. Thank you all… God bless!!! -Demetrius Gibbs aka Krumb Snatcha

With no doubt a Boston pioneer!! He’ll be always a Gang Starr Foundation member!!
