    Shit is dope,
I came from skateboard scene from the 90´s, where you get

in touch with the streets, for real… hookers, hustlers,

dealers, punk, rap, and all that shit.
So i grew up listening pure hip hop music, funk, soul and

    also indie rock, punk.
And it is dope to listen Dj Premier make a tribute to the

    real alternative musicians with attitude.
So as a Dj Premier fan i feel thankful to listen this

    tribute.
If you guys like also indie and alternative rock, i

    recommend my prefered bands:

Superchunk, Dinossaur Jr, Pavement, Pixies, The

    Pillows…etx etc etc…

    LOL!
    Peace!

Wonce again, DJ Premier connecting the dots like no one else can.

This mix struck a strong chord with me because- being a white guy living in the suburbs in the late 80s- hip-hop came to my attention by way of a punk-rock mix tape that my friends and I used to trade to each other. That’s how we discovered music from bands in different cities in those days; we traded mix tape cassettes. The Beastie Boys have made this point in the past, but it seems to be a forgotten fact: hip-hop initially found a white audience with the same people who were open-minded enough to like punk as well, because they liked music that took some chances, that wasn’t afraid to be different . . .

Remember the opening question on De La’s “Stakes is High”? The first thing you hear on that album is a someone saying “when I first heard Criminal Minded”. Well, when *I* first heard Criminal Minded it was the song The Bridge is Over, which was on one of those punk rock mix cassettes from way back when!

Anyway, thanks for posting this incredible mix, and all the memories that it triggered. I’ve been reading a lot McLaren obituaries in the past week, but none of them adequately described his role in recognizing hip-hop as the vital, dynamic music movement that it was.

    Much appreciation,

    Andre

Respect for a fine mix – nothing from FANS though? Brilliant cross-over opera beats treats from Mr McLaren.

    RIP Malcolm Mclaren:

It was a good compilation of tunes. I wouldn’t call it a mix though.

  • Thanks Primo for this great mix. I produced some of these tracks for Malcolm. This includes “It Was A New York Phenomenon”, “Zulu Nation Party Interview”, “Bow Wow Wow Show (Live)”, “42nd Street”
and the “Shout Out (Feat. Burn One & Forrest Gump)”. We were also honored to meet with some of the pioneers and also to work with KRS, Rakim and De La as well as upcoming artists.

Thank you again, it is important for us to really tell the story about how it really was. How Hip Hop is really a culture with many disciplines that changed the world. It is the soundtrack of our lives.
    Peace,
    Henri Scars Struck

Nice, but what did MM have to do with Art of Noise? Also, as someone says above, needs some Fans – eg Madame Butterfly (Un Bel Di Vedremo)

  • Comment from Samira

A TRIBUTE FIT FOR THE AMAZING VISIONARY MALCOLM MCLAREN WAS…

  • Comment from Pearce

@Warren: Art of Noise were formed out of the Duck Rock sessions, so though MM wasn’t involved in their music he’s responsible for their inception. Which is a similar situation to his relationship with Sex Pistols now I think about it.

I remember hanging with Malcolm in a NYC club and spotting Guru and Primo chatting. I said Malcolm, that’s Guru and Primier over there at which time his eyes lit up. “The lads from Gangstarr”? He was very excited and honored to meet you both.

Mass Appeal has been looping in my head non stop for the last week. Will never forget the time and place I first heard it.

R.I.P to Malcolm and Bald Head Slick
