WEDNESDAY CLASSICS: WBLS Thunder Storm Radio Show (02/18/1994)

This is something new I’ll do in honor of the new blog. Me personally almost only listen to golden age hip hop, nothing wrong with hip hop today but it’s just doesn’t move my head as much as I want. And I’m still finding new hip hop from the 90s, it’s was crazy back then!! Now to pleasure my fans I’ll be posting every wednesday a 90s throwback mix by the one and only. You can expect 21 weeks with throwbacks from 1994 till 1999. Me personal digging in my database. Almost everything is ripped from tape in the best quality available, some are more rare than others but with the internet really blowing up last years it’s less difficult to find them actually, but hopefully I can still amaze some heads. Or if you are new and very young fan: believe me, these mixes are perfect to discover the 90s hip hop sound. It’s cool to have them on my pc and all that, but I love it more to own those tapes, and I know there will be heads around here having some of them when I don’t haha. You will learn two things on wednesday now, 1) DJ Premier is a legend, plain and simple, he not only make beats, but he moved hip hop in general in that era and 2) Nothing is better then just cool down and relax on some real hip hop. WARNING: DJ PREMIER ONLY MIX WITH REAL VINYL HERE!! Enjoy:

I’ve seen some episodes are bootlegged by a Japanese label as volumes and then posted by some blogs. Cool of them, but these mixes are already longer circulating on my hard disc (thanks to the real heads on the real places) and I have more episodes. We pop of with the first episode ever recorded on tape of DJ Premier’s Thunder Storm radio show together with the G-Man. Once upon a time, long long before LiveFromHQ was DJ Premier the DJ of a New York radio show… If you know the songs, feel free to add them in the comment section! Sorry, but it’s not the full show. I doubt someone has it?? Feel free to contact us!!

Joell Ortiz – Project Boy

First I did the radio rip and here’s the mp3. Note, it’s not the CDQ. It seems he wants to hold it back for a while, the ‘CDQ’ you can find on some blogs is only low bitrate… Here you have the mp3 rip of the HD version. Mastered a bit and it’s good to bang your mp3 player! I’m not so kind on the song though, but a lot of you do so enjoy:

DJ Premier Interview with DJ Semtex

Premo stopped by DJ Semtex’s show last Friday after Tim Westwood. They discuss Guru, his latest signing Nick Javas, wanting to work with Drake, and new artists coming through such as Nicki Minaj and Diggy Simmons.

Oh yeah, and I think I know what’s going on why he wants to work with Drake while a lot of real heads think fuck Drake. He wants to prove to us (or the media) how dope he can make some one with his sound I THINK.

You can find the Tim Westwood interview here that is practically the same. Go to the 2hour mark for DJ Premier:

Solar Opens Attack On Guru’s Nephew And DJ Premier’s Friends

“It is more than obvious that certain disgruntled people from Guru’s past are trying to use this tragic situation to settle a score with Guru and myself for whatever reason which is shameful,” says Solar.

Solar will be releasing official documents which will confirm and verify everything that has been addressed in the official press releases regarding Guru’s health. Furthermore it will show the hoax that has been played by certain media outlets who have not provided Solar a chance to refute the lies being perpetrated against them. And the immoral and dishonest behavior by some people from Guru’s past.

The official documents, according to Solar, will clearly and undeniably show that:

…there has never been any hospital guest list recorded by Solar to prevent anybody from visiting Guru.
…all visits have been recorded and they will also reveal that somebody from Guru’s past misrepresented himself as his attorney to get access to Guru which is illegal by law, as well as numerous people saying they are Guru’s family who they are not.
…Guru has made his proxy on his own in conjunction with hospital personnel as required by law and outside of Solar’s presence.
…Guru has had no conversations with his nephew, Justin Elam, on anything that he is lying about in his published YouTube video. They were not close at all and Guru’s nephew has never known Solar on a personal level.
…Justin Elam is using Guru’s name to advance his selfish needs and has no right to use the brand Guru or GangStarr in any way, shape or form, on YouTube or anywhere else.

Guru continues to recover. Recent MRI test results, which is a magnetic resonance imaging like a high tech X-ray, are encouraging.

Solar, who is Guru’s official spokesperson, visits his longtime partner and best friend everyday to support him. Unfortunately certain people try to shed bad light on Solar by broadcasting wrong rumors and allegations regarding the producer’s involvement in this tragic situation.

VINTAGE: Forbidden Fruit Demo Single 1993 (Prod. by Vada Nobles)

Among the random stuff I got to review when I was in high school was a cassette single by a crew named Forbidden Fruit. They were on the no-name “Big Boss Records” (located at 202 St. Nicholas Ave in New York, now the home of 21st Century Urology, which is probably not a hip-hop label) and the cassette single was so cheap that the O-card was literally scotch-taped together. Forbidden Fruit was a two-man crew that bore a striking resemblance, in terms of sound, to Naughty By Nature. It was 1993, so it’s got the piano-heavy production and Treach Lite-like flows. Obvious NBN derivation aside, I really like these tracks. The horns that drop in on “Keep It In Mind” sound awkward and out of place, but how can you not love that Tony D-style piano loop. Production is credited to Vada Nobles (who co-produced Lauryn Hill’s solo album) and Forbidden Fruit.

I haven’t seen this one floating around anywhere else, so I’m guessing this particular single is pretty rare. Both vocals and instrumentals are included from the original cassette single.

I can’t repeat how much I love those old things that still surface the internet. But no words are spend on the fact if they’re actually Fabidden Fruit of Mike Rone & H. Stax?? But I think so, the name, the city, the amount of persons in the group, … Can’t be no one else, can it??

Ok, they don’t look like each other, so who are they? Nonetheless, I post what I like. Lets go further to the real F.A.B.I.D. I heard Fabidden Fruit for the first time when they were on Guru‘s Ill Kid label in 1995, later they rhymed over a couple of DJ Premier beats before they were preparing their debut album that should came out last year… I’m still waiting… Remember that unreleased Premo track “Get It In”, damn! Now enjoy this dope demo single from 1993 before the cassette snaps from a different Fabidden Fruit?! Sorry if you already got it.

Props to Normal Bias who ripped it last year!

More more more news, after Busta Rhymes featured on a joint for the upcoming NYGz album “Hustla’s Union” did DJ Premier produce one for his upcoming album “The Chemo”. Damn, 2K10! In other words, Premo’s dream to work with Busta Rhymes comes true. Current release date for Bussa Buss upcoming album is July 4th, but you can expect a delay for sure! Rumours also tells us P. Diddy wants DJ Premier on his upcoming album. Come again?!
